Whether your pressure washer has an internal or external unloader valve, the principle is the same. When the machine is running, the water pressure reaches a maximum level, determined by the setting of the unloader valve. When the pressure reaches that level, the unloader valve redirects the pressurized water in the machine to the bypass line or pump. If the machine is run for too long without spraying water to exit bypass mode and slow the water flow rate, it will damage the pump. That's why most manufacturers recommend pulling the trigger at least every 30 seconds or so. Here are the basics:
Trigger Engagement:When you pull the trigger on your pressure washer gun, water flows from the pump to the nozzle at high pressure.
Trigger Release: Releasing the trigger causes an immediate surge in pressure in the pump.
Unloader Valve Activation: The unloader valve senses the pressure increase and redirects the water flow from the pump to the bypass line or back to the inlet side of the pump.
Pressure Stabilization: By redirecting the flow, the unloader valve stabilizes the pressure in the pump, preventing potential damage and ensuring smooth system operation.
Before you begin adjusting the unloader, remove the chemical injector, connect the hose and gun, then install the nozzle you want to test; with the engine running and the trigger gun in the open position, slowly turn the adjustment knob to gradually increase the pressure. Watch your gauge carefully and slowly adjust the knob until you reach the rated pressure of the pump. When the pressure reaches the rated pressure, turn the adjustment knob a little more to see if the pressure gauge continues to rise. If it continues to rise, then we have chosen the wrong nozzle! Install a larger nozzle until you find the best nozzle.
Follow below Tips when you adjust
Tips 1: Know the maximum operating specifications of your pump.
Tips 2: Never exceed those specifications.
Tips 3: Never install a nozzle that allows you to exceed the maximum pump pressure.
Tips 4: Once you have found the perfect nozzle that gives the exact pressure (and won't exceed it), never touch the unloader again. Remove the adjustment knob and throw it away.
Tips 5: After all this, if you want to reduce the pressure, just install a larger nozzle, but never install a small nozzle that was the perfect size found by following rules 1-4 above.
